Dans l'attente de la fin du monde qui assombrit les débuts de l'an Mil, le moine Anselme (futur Saint Anselme) décide de démontrer l'existence de Dieu pour rendre aux hommes l'espérance. Il s'agit pour lui d'élaborer un argument unique dont la logique sera telle qu'elle emportera l'adhésion de quiconque s'en remet à sa seule intelligence.
C'est son secrétaire, le jeune Clermont, qui, après la jeunesse de son maître et les circonstances de la fondation de l'abbaye du Bec en Normandie, nous relate les hésitations d'Anselme, ses découragements, les complots qui se trament pour l'empêcher de parvenir à mettre au point la fameuse preuve. Une preuve qu'il parviendra pourtant à formaliser et qui, de Descartes à Kant, fascinera tant les philosophes. Bien entendu, sa démonstration constitue le grand moment du livre.
Mais si Dieu existe, et que son existence est démontrable, quel phénomène de la nature peut encore prétendre échapper aux lumières de la raison ? Bref, si Dieu existe, comment ne pas être incroyant ?

Né en 1948 à Paris, Alain Nadaud est entré en littérature au début des années 80 avec un roman au titre fracassant, Archéologie du zéro (plus de 30.000 exemplaires vendus). Il a bâti une œuvre exigeante, régulièrement récompensée (Prix de l'union des éditeurs de langue française en 1989, Grand prix du roman de la société des gens de lettres en 1995, prix Méditerranée en 1997), successivement chez Denoël (" L'Infini " de Philippe Sollers), Seuil, Grasset, Acte Sud. Dernier titre paru : Le Vacillement du monde (Acte Sud, 2006).
